VACANCY:  ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT WORKER

St Bede with St Clement Church have secured one year’s funding for an Advocacy and Support worker to be based St Bede’s Church, Liverpool L8 0RY and outreach locations, if required. 

The role has 2 primary aspects:

  • To provide advocacy to support local residents with their problems, rights and entitlements to mitigate hardship, mitigate escalation of the problem and lead to resolution of the issues
  • To support the development of life skills for local residents and support positive societal integration through the provision of themed workshops

The Fee is £12 per hour with an annual contract value of £8,064.  The contract hours are on average 14 hours per week or 56 hours per calendar month.

A satisfactory DBS check is required

ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT WORKER BRIEF

Freelance Position:    Advocacy and Support Worker

Fee:    £12 per hr. - £8,064 annual contract value

Hours:    14 hrs. Average per wk. or 56hrs pcm - delivering 4hrs pcm (2 x 2hrs) of workshops, 38hrs advocacy sessions pcm (drop-in & appointments) & 14hrs pcm admin/promo/prep/follow up

Location: St Bede’s Church Toxteth Liverpool L8 (base) and if required, outreach locations

Responsible to:   Vicar of St Bede’s in the first instance and the board of Trustees of the PCC

Role Summary: There are 2 primary aspects:

  1. To provide advocacy to support local residents with their problems, rights and entitlements to mitigate hardship, mitigate escalation of the problem and lead to resolution of the issues
  2. To support the development of life skills for local residents and support positive societal integration through the provision of themed workshops

Section 1: Key Services:  

  1. To manage the operation of the advocacy service 
  2. To run advocacy drop-in sessions and appointments for local residents (one drop-in must be delivered during the operation of the weekly community market)
  3. To organise and deliver relevant themed 2hr workshops e.g. local customs, being a good citizen & neighbour, laws, cultures, health services, local history, support networks, rights and entitlements etc. on a fortnightly basis for local residents and engage the input and participation of relevant key speakers where appropriate
  4. To formulate and maintain effective practices for the service and workshops
  5. To set up all record keeping and administration/systems the effective delivery of the project and undertake case checking and file reviews
  6. To track, monitor and evaluate the project in particular for the Advocacy service, records of the number of people accessing the service; the theme of support required e.g. housing, health, school, Citizenship, benefits, access to work etc. as well as sign posting to other agencies as relevant. Outcomes of the support acquired and the impact this has had on the beneficiary included cases resolved, benefits accessed, etc. to be recorded; for the themed workshops, baseline data at the start of the workshops would be attained on level of knowledge etc. and also taken at the end with a Q&A session. Discussions, questionnaires, observations and short tests etc. would also be part of the process for assessing increased knowledge and awareness.
  7. To promote the advocacy service, workshops and other courses/activities at St Bede’s
  8. To meet with the Vicar weekly and to produce a monthly report for review by the Vicar, prior to reporting to the PCC
  9. To build on existing stakeholder links locally and across the public and voluntary sectors
  10. To refer clients/beneficiaries to the other St Bede’s courses (IT and ESOL) and services (Community Market & Deanery Debt advice) as well to relevant external providers

Core Responsibilities:

Adhere to St Bede’s policies at all time with particular emphasis on Equal Opportunities, Data Protection, Confidentiality and Health & Safety.

To report any behaviour, conversations, concerns or comments which are inappropriate.

Section 2: Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

The successful candidate is required to have a high level of ability in understanding, analysis and the resolution of issues. 

Knowledge/awareness

Skills/experience

  1. Track record in providing general advocacy to the public (min 1 years’ experience)
  2. listening, verbal, written and presentation communication skills
  3. to communicate well with clients, colleagues and other agencies
  4. to utilise case recording and other information systems that support advocacy provision
  5. to undertake analysis and research to support the formulation of action plans to meet clients' needs
  6. to represent clients/beneficiaries when necessary, and where appropriate to challenge decision makers
  7. to support and empower clients/beneficiaries at all times
  8. to work on your own initiative, plan and manage the workload and keep clear, accurate records to required standards
  9. to use a computer, including Word, Excel, databases, internet and email systems

Qualifications, training and accreditation

Desirable: To have achieved the National Advocacy Qualification, including any relevant units for the provision of advocacy services and/or hold other relevant qualification for example, in the field of social work

Notes: 

  • This is a freelance position and so self-employed and the contractor must hold their own insurance and will be responsible for their own taxes etc. 
  • The successful contractor will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS check which must be satisfactory
